Anyone remember the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Curre St, Cwm? I think that this Church was a tin hut but I could be wrong.

We came across the “Superintendant Registrar’s Certificate of the Registry of a building for the solemnization of Marriages therein” the other day!

As you can see the certificate is dated 27th November 1950 although the Marriage Register only has marriage dates for 1947.

The certificate below, as you can see, was a ” Form for Certifying a Place of Meeting for Religious Worship under the Places of Worship Act , 1855″ and indicates that the Parish Priest at the time – Fr. Gerard Francis Inglis was living in Crosscombe Terrace, Cwm. I’m not sure how far away the Church in Curre Street was from the Priests house. This certificate is also dated 1950.

The Cwm Baptism, Death and Marriage Register details are : Baptism (1947 – 1952), Death (1947-1951) and Marriage (1947). More information regarding these Registers can be obtained by emailing the address on the contacts page.

If anyone out there has a photo of this Church that we could use it would really make our day.

Ash Wednesday  …falls on Wednesday 22nd February and is a day of Fasting and Abstinence from meat.

Priest appointments …please can any parishioner wishing to speak to Fr. Mike on a Sunday morning arrange for a time between 9am and 9.30am, alternately, you can contact Fr. Mike by using the contact details on the contacts page to make an appointment to speak with him. A message can be left on his phone and he will return call at the earliest opportunity.

I came across the following page when I was visiting The Universe online. It is an online information page about Tyburn – its convent and The Benedictines who live there. The page address is www.tyburnconvent.org.uk and it goes on to describe the community and its works.

We have blown away the cobwebs from the available Church Registers and have scanned the enclosed documents.

This means that we may be able to assist you with your family history research by supplying copies of the original documents.

At one time the hall was used for the Friday and Sunday Night Dances and was well attended by people from Ebbw Vale and beyond.

For a year or two it was even divided into school rooms because the children were unable to return to All Saint’s School because of the damage caused by a fire.

It did have continued use, for instance,  for breakfast mornings after First Holy Communion or the school Nativity but generally speaking it was run down.

A few years ago (approx. 12 years and the garden was sorted a short time later) The Friends decided to try and renovate this large space so that it could be used as a venue for Parishioners and the wider community.  A lot of hard work over a considerable amount of time was undertaken by these volunteers and I enclose before and after pictures just to give some idea of what it was like and what has been achieved.

Funds were raised and slowly but surely improvements were made…… New kitchen facilites, disabled access, disabled toilets to name but a few changes. The lounge area  is situated at the one end of the hall. The hall and stage offer quite good acoustics. It is now used to host social evenings, cardiac rehab classes and parties to name but a few uses.

The Friends also undertake buffet’s and 2 menus are enclosed here…

Thanks to all who braved the cold stuff to attend the Quiz night. Numbers were down but even so an enjoyable night was had by all.

Some Diary Dates…

Saturday 18th February at 7pm Male voice choir concert, St Illtyd’s Church, Dowlais. Tickets £5 and all poceeds raised will go towards HCPT  – a charity which enables children to visit Lourdes.

Wednesday 29th February AND 28th March, monthly coffee / cake and bingo  morning takes place in the Church hall after Mass.

Quiz Night, Thursday 8th March, 7pm for 7.30pm. If you’re interested in participating then contacts can be found on contact page.

Our Schools  …

All Saints has a visit from the school nurse on Wednesday the 8th February and parents are welcome to come and discuss any concerns they may have. On Friday February 10th school finishes at the normal time and then half term commences. Children to return after the half term break on Monday 20th February.

Bishop Hedley half term dates are from 13th – 17th Feb 2012 and the school web site has an Inclement weather link which will offer advice regarding travel and school closures etc.

Please note that Mass time on Wednesday is at 9am.

The Friends of All Saints meet on Monday at 5.30pm in the boys room. If you have a spare half hour why not pop along?

Luncheon club will have their meal on Tuesday at 1pm.

Monthly Quiz will take place on Thursday at 7pm for 7.30pm. ALL welcome.

Lent -  this year 22nd February is Ash Wednesday then we are in to Lent. Father Mike has suggested we have Stations of the Cross before Mass on Wednesdays during Lent and Silent Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament each Thursday from 9.30am – 10.30am.

Please remember in your prayers all the sick of the parish and those who care for them. We also remember those whose anniversaries occur at this time.
